Daadab (Agenzia Fides) - In 2009, at the request of Cooperazione Italiana, an Italian association of volunteers AVSI, (Associazione Volontari per il Servizio Internazionale), achieved an educative intervention inside Daadab refugee camp, one of the largest in the world, which hosts some 270,000 displaced persons from Somalia. Situated 500 km north of Nairobi and 80 from the border with Somalia, the camp was created in 1991. Refugees have lived here for more than 20 years, and the majority today were born here in the camp. Living conditions are difficult and climatic conditions are tough. Today, thanks to AVSI, there are renovated school structures, 186 trained primary teachers, teaching 33,000 children, 32 classrooms and 3 laboratories renovated and frequented by a total 1,887 pupils.
