ASIA/AFGHANISTAN - Indian Jesuits remain in the country in spite of dangers

Friday, 30 April 2010

Kabul (Agenzia Fides) – To stay in Afghanistan to accomplish the delicate pastoral work and mission in which they are engaged: this is the intention of Indian Jesuits in the country, who have decided not to follow the example of the Indian government, which has suspended several projects undertaken in the country. Even many non-governmental organizations in India have abandoned Kabul, in fact, following recent attacks in the capital and other areas of the country targetting people of Indian nationality. The most serious was the attack on February 26 that killed 16 people, including 7 Indians.
Lacking the basic conditions of security, the New Delhi government has decided to abandon their commitment and direct involvement in the task of rebuilding Afghanistan. However, the Indian Jesuits and their lay collaborators, who constitute the largest Catholic group in the country, have decided not only to stay but also to extend their pastoral and social programs.
"I am convinced that the Holy Spirit strengthens and leads our brothers in their difficult mission," said a statement sent to Fides by Fr. Edward Mudavassery SJ, responsible for over 4,000 Jesuits present n South Asia, including those in Afghanistan. "The Jesuits are well aware of the insecurity that reigns in the country, but all the men have voluntarily decided to remain and to continue to perform their social works and educational services, which make an important contribution to the good of the nation," concludes Fr. Edward. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 30/04/2010)
