AMERICA/PERU - Franciscan Missionary Convent celebrates 285th anniversary of foundation

Tuesday, 13 April 2010

Ocopa (Agenzia Fides) – The famous Convent of Santa Rosa de Ocopa (in the central Andes of Peru), founded by the Franciscans, this month celebrates the 285th anniversary of its founding and 100 years since the death of Venerable Padre Pio Sarobi (see Fides 09/03/2010). From April 12 to 18, they are celebrating the “Ocopina Week” with the conference that will illustrate the history, influence in the region of the convent, and missionary work of several important Franciscan Fathers. The Week will also feature days of festivities for children and young people, as well as folk and music festivals. There will be a choral concert offered by the Catholic University Sedes Sapientiae, Saturday, April 17 at 4pm at the church.
The day of the celebration itself, Sunday, April 18, the 4 o'clock Mass will be presided by Archbishop Pedro Barreto of Huancayo and will be attended by the local authorities and the whole parish community. The Convent of Santa Rosa de Ocopa, at the center of Peru, in the Central Andes, is considered a jewel of the Mantaro Valley, where the evangelization of the people of the region first began. It was also the operations center from which the evangelization of the forest was organized and that reached out to the northern and eastern borders of the country. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 13/04/2010)
