He Bei (Fides Service) - In the Chinese province with the largest Catholic community Hebei, besides social work and education, women religious are involved in a special way in caring for people with leprosy. Two years ago being short of personnel, the Leper Hospital at Wang Du a small town in Bao Ding diocese, asked a local diocesan community of women religious if they could help. Since the Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix of the Souls of Purgatory, arrived in 2002 something has changed at the Centre. Both the patients and paramedics are different. One patient said it is as if the Sisters had brought with them the breeze of Spring. “On the wards the Sisters are ‘angels’ and the lepers have learned to smile again ”, says Faith, the local Catholic news bulletin. “We never imagined that anyone could show so much loving care to people like us excluded from society” the patients say. Mother Superior Sr. Liu Su Ping will not to be interviewed and has refused several awards, because, as she says “this is our duty, we are only following the teaching of Jesus”. She says that more of her Sisters have asked to be sent to serve the lepers.
