AMERICA/HAITI - Jesuits: houses, centers, and personnel of the Society of Jesus spared

Friday, 15 January 2010

Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) – The General Curia of the Jesuits has sent Fides the letter from Fr. François Kawas, delegate of the French Province of Canada (of which Haiti is a part), describing the situation after the earthquake. Overall, the houses and the Jesuits were affected less than others, and all the Jesuits who are in Haiti have survived the earthquake and are safe and sound, except Fr. Derin Sainfariste, who was injured in the collapse of a building. In Ouanaminthe the Pedro Arrupe Residence and centers (Solidarité Fwontalyé and Fe y Alegria) suffered no damage; both the Jesuits and lay collaborators are doing well. In Biassou, the Karl Lévêque Residence is intact and the Jesuits are doing well. In Canapé-Vert, the Ignace de Loyola Residence is slightly damaged but the Jesuits are doing well, although they are still in shock. The novitiate in Tabarre is partly damaged. The water tank installed on the roof collapsed, causing some damage. The Fathers, and the first year novices and others are fine. GADRU (Groupe d'Appui au Développement Rural) has had the house destroyed, but all were able to leave the building at the moment of the quake. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 15/1/2010)
