AMERICA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros: “The country has opened the doors of all its hospitals and reinforced medical personnel,” fundraising telethon planned

Santiago de los Caballeros (Agenzia Fides) - Archbishop Ramon Benito de La Rosa y Carpio of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, has been contacted by Agenzia Fides, for updates on the situation and aid to the nearby Church of Haiti. "Right now our brethren in Haiti are urgently in need milk, water, biscuits, canned food, linens, and tents to sleep in," informs the text sent to Fides from the Archbishop's Office. "The country has opened the doors of all its hospitals to offer aid to the quake victims of Haiti,” the message goes on. “The Ministry of Health has sent specialists in trauma and anesthesia into the border area. Mobile centers for first aid to the wounded have been set up. Medical staff was reinforced in all the centers of the country. Public food dispensaries have been installed near the borders in order to provide food rations to our neighboring brethren in Haiti. The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications has sent technicians to help reestablish communication in the country affected by the earthquake."
The Church in the Dominican Republic is organizing itself at the level of dioceses and parishes throughout the country. The Archdiocese of Santiago de los Caballeros has organized collections to help Haiti and on Saturday, January 16 the are planning a tele-marathon during which the institution "Santiago Solidario" corporation of the institutions of the city, in coordination with the Archdiocese, will promote the main aid collection for the neighboring country.
