Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) – "All 5 Camillian seminarians returned to our house and are well and are working in our hospital." This is good news that the Superior of the Camillian Community of Port-au-Prince, Father Crescenzo Mazzella, gave Fr. Antonio Menegon of the Camillian Task Force. "Our hospital is in fairly good condition and is at work full time. Over 500 earthquake victims have been treated and discharged and at present there are a hundred that occupy every possible space. There are only 3 doctors and 4 nurses, and of course all the members of the community. Unfortunately, the earth continues to shake, but there's no time to stop. We continue to provide assistance. We are preparing a list of the most necessary things, which we will try to send out soon."
According to another Camillian religious, Father Joaquim Paulo Cipriano, all children attending the school run by the Camillians are alive, and the school has also held up well to the shocks. The hospital buildings have been only slightly damaged. Only the “chateau d'eau” is in danger...injured and dying are being treated without the use of anesthetics because, unfortunately, the supply has run out,” said Father Cyprian.
The staff of CTF Central Rome is organizing a team led by Brother Luke Perletti, Head of Mission, composed of medical and nursing staff, probably including the Camillian Sisters of the Sick, which will soon go to Haiti. The only problem at present is that there is no guaranteed safety at the airport in Port-au-Prince. (PG/AP) (Agenzia Fides 15/1/2010)
