AMERICA/HAITI - Hospital run by Camillians is only one functioning. “We are in need of practically everything,” Fr. Efisio Locci tells Fides

Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) - There are three Italian Camillians and two Haitian fathers currently working on the island that was devastated by the earthquake. In this time of great need, all communications with Haiti have been cut, and no direct news is possible. Through Father Efisio Locci, who is Director of Health and Development of the Camillian Missionaries, Agenzia Fides learned that hospitals in the area were destroyed, all but the one run by the Camillians located in a peripheral neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. There seems to be another hospital running as well, but to date there is no confirmation. "The hospital is full. We need medicines, medical equipment for plaster casts, disinfectants, and aid to buy food," Father Efisio told Fides. At this time the head of the hospital is Father Gianfranco Loiero, who is doing fine. The first two Camillian priests from Haiti, Father Luxembourg Pierre Giraud and Father Richard Eugene, were ordained on November 16, 2008 (see Fides 28/11/2008) by the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, J. Serge Miot, who remained under the rubble of the earthquake. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 14/01/2010)
