AMERICA/PERU - Serving the migrants: Scalabrinians celebrate 122nd anniversary of foundation

Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Lima (Agenzia Fides) – With great joy, the Congregation of Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo (Scalabrinians) celebrated their 122nd anniversary of foundation in different parts of the world, marking the birth of their charism of serving immigrants, an example to the whole universal Church. In Peru, the Missionaries of St. Charles celebrated this date in two moments: on the border between Peru and Chile, with the formation of pastoral agents of the Diocese of Tacna and Moquegua, and then, with the community of Callao, with a Mass of Thanksgiving in honor of the Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, Founder of the Congregation.
The Congregation of Scalabrini Missionaries was founded in 1887 by Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, Bishop of Piacenza, Italy. From the beginning, this congregation was devoted to the service of European immigrants who had great difficulty in leaving their countries. They also brought spiritual assistance to immigrants who wanted to preserve their faith and their cultural roots. Its missionaries are currently in over 29 countries, assisting thousands of migrants. In 2000, they arrived in Peru and have since launched several initiatives to help displaced persons, migrants, refugees, and thousands of our brothers and sisters who live far from their homeland.
