AMERICA/URUGUAY - Family, work and new forms of social culture among issues addressed by Bishops of Uruguay in their 2nd Annual Plenary Assembly

Florida (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishops of Uruguay have issued a press release at the end of the Second Annual Plenary Assembly, celebrated from November 4 to 11. Two events that have marked this year: the visit of Vice-President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (CAL), Archbishop Octavio Ruiz, and the organization of the General Assembly of CELAM, scheduled for 2011, which will be hostedUruguay.
Among the important moments remembered at this Assembly were: the visit of the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Anselmo Pecorari, the national pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Patroness of Uruguay, the “Virgen de los Trenta y Tres,” and the election of new authorities of the Bishops' Conference . The Bishops, along with the Pastoral Vicars of 10 dioceses and the President of the Conference of Religious of Uruguay, have covered some important topics, as highlighted by the press release.... Family: the issue of fertility, responsible parenthood and the different types of families; Education: the need to combine freedom, integration, technical training, training and introduction to modern values, the quality of life in its various dimensions: poverty, misery, old age, civil coexistence, participation in public life; new forms of mass culture: the society of the spectacle, drugs, hedonistic atheism, issues of cultural identity and work productivity, the way to a prosperous and fair society, the ethics of production and consumption; the political situation: the Bishops revisited what had been reviewed last April. At the end, the Bishops elected authorities for the years 2010-2012. The President is Bishop Carlos Collazzi, Vice-President is Bishop Rodolfo Wirz, and General Secretary is Bishop Heriberto Bodeant.
