Tirana (Agenzia Fides) – At the Fall Plenary Assembly of the Albanian Bishops' Conference (CEA), which met in Tirana on November 9-10, the Bishops reflected on the Encyclical "Caritas in Veritate.” After a brief exposition of the papal document, as CEA spokesman Father Gjergj Meta tells Afenzia Fides, they considered the situation in Albania, particularly in regards to poverty, unemployment, respect for life, and other topics of a social and ethical nature. The Bishops' Conference has decided to organize a symposium devoted to the document, during which it will examine and discuss the situation in the country.
During the sessions of the Assembly, they also spoke of the Year for Priests and, following an analysis of the situation in Albania, they planned several activities at national and international level for this year. At the center of the sessions of the Conference of Bishops was also the centenary of the birth of the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, a daughter of Albania. The Bishops spoke of the celebrations for this anniversary and organized an ad hoc committee, which will work to organize the various initiatives. The Bishops were also presented with the work of various Commissions of the CEA and the activities conducted at national and international levels. Particular mention was made of the commendable work of Caritas in the delicate situation of earthquake victims this year in Diber. At the end of the work the bishops appointed Fr. Gjergj Meta spokesman of the CEA. Fr. Meta is a priest of the Archdiocese of Tirana-Durres. For the first time that the Bishops' Conference will also have a press office for an institutionalized relationship with the media. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 12/11/2009)
