ASIA/INDONESIA - Bishop of Ruteng appointed

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Benedict XVI, on November 7, 2009, appointed Fr. Hubertus Leteng of the clergy of Ruteng, Rector of the Ritapiret Major Seminary, Maumere, as Bishop of Ruteng (Indonesia).
The new Bishop was born January 1, 1959 in Taga, in the Diocese of Ruteng. He entered Pius XII Minor Seminary in Kisol, studying Philosophy and Theology at the St. Petrus Major Seminary in Ritapiret. He was ordained a priest on July 29, 1988 for the Diocese of Ruteng. He has carried out the following ministries: 1988-1989: Assistant of the Minor Seminary (TOR) in Ilela; 1989-1991: Formator in the Ritapiret Major Seminary; 1991-1992: Parish activities and studies in Jakarta; 1992-1996: Studies for a degree in Spiritual Theology at the "Teresianum" in Rome; 1997-2007: Spiritual Director at the Ritapiret Major Seminary; 1997-2009: Dean of the Theology Department of Ledalero. Since 2009 he has served as Rector of the Ritapiret Major Seminary.
The Diocese of Ruteng, erected in 1961, is suffragan of the Archdiocese of Ende, and has a surface area of 7,136 km sq and a population of 711,903 inhabitants, in which 647,696 are Catholic. It has 75 parishes, 218 priests (138 diocesan and 80 religious), 25 religious brothers, 91 seminarians, and 247 sisters. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 7/11/2009)
