AMERICA/UNITED STATES - US children: the poorest of the developed world

Friday, 6 November 2009

New York (Agenzia Fides) - Nearly half of all U.S. children (49.2%) will be on food stamps at some point during childhood. This is what was found by a nationally representative survey of 4,800 American households, published by the American Medical Association's Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. Nearly 90% of African American children live in single-parent families. “If you have food stamps, It means that you are in a precarious situation and your family does not have many resources,” says Mark Rank of the University of Washington (Missouri), co-author of the study, along with Thomas Hirschl of the University of Cornell (New York). The two who have also shown in another study how half of US adults have used food stamps at least once in their lives, affirm: US children are at the top of the poverty line in the Western World.
