AMERICA/MEXICO - Witness to Christ in homes, hospitals, prisons: 600 Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist renew their commitment

Wednesday, 4 November 2009

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) – In spite of the rain that was pouring down in Mexico City last Friday, October 30, nearly 600 Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (in Spanish: MECE) renewed their commitment in taking Holy Communion to the sick in their homes, in hospitals, and in prisons, in the presence of Auxiliary Bishop Armando Colin Cruz. The rite took place in the Parish of Saints Philip and James, and entrusted the MECE with the task of bringing spiritual relief in the name of the Catholic Church, in the areas of Azcapotzalco and Gustavo A. Madero. The group of nearly 600 MECE were joined by another group of new Ministers that received a Mandate from the Bishop for the first time, “to bring God Himself present in Jesus in the Eucharist and to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist, distributing the Bread from Heaven to our brethren.”
The Bishop exhorted the new ministers and those who renewed their commitment to serve “with enthusiasm” and “joy” and “prayer.” Serving the Lord with enthusiasm, as we know we carry Jesus...Serving the Lord with “joy”: no one has been forced to respond to the Lord, we feel great strength in being able to bring the Lord, as serving God is doing His Will. The third aspect is to be women and men of prayer. Thus, this means maintaining an attitude of prayer and action, dressing in a simple manner, “as we are bearing witness to Christ in people's homes, through our words, and we should invite those present to join in prayer.” The Bishop asked the MECE to be attentive to syncretism or confusion, as “there are many sects that try to distort the real meaning of the Eucharist.” (CE) (Agenzia Fides 04/11/2009)
