ASIA/HONG KONG - Salesian Sister Monica Liu is new President of the Association of Major Women Superiors in Hong Kong; Bishop John Tong invites religious to participate in Year for Priestly Vocations

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – Sr. Monica Liu, of the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians, Provincial Superior of the Salesian Sisters, has been elected the new President of the Association of Major Women Superiors in Hong Kong in the Annual Assembly that was recently held and attended by Bishop John Tong of Hong Kong and Monsignor Pierre Lam Minh, MEP, Vicar General of the Diocese. On the occasion, Bishop John Tong called for “an active participation of the religious present in Hong Kong in the celebration of the Year for Priestly Vocations, asking them to pray for vocations, to intensify community life, to bear witness to the Gospel in Hong Kong.”
According to a report from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), Sr. Theresa Pathickal, of the PIME Sisters, and Sr. Prisca Tsang, Superior General of the Sisters Announcers of the Lord (SAL) were elected Vice-Presidents. Sr. Cynthia Chan, FDCC was elected Bursar, and Sr. Magdalene Lam, FMM, Secretary General. The mandate lasts from 2009-2011.
The Association of Major Women Superiors in Hong Kong forms a part of the Union of Major Superiors of Women's Institutes, created by the Holy See in 1972. In Hong Kong, all the major superiors of the Institutes present in the territory are part of the Association, including congregations of contemplative life. The objective of the Association is to reinforce collaboration among the religious, promoting integral development of each institute, so that it may better live out its own charism, under the guidance of the Holy See and the diocese, in all that concerns their apostolate.
