AFRICA/EGYPT - Update on activities of the Catholic Church in Egypt

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) – Agenzia Fides has gathered information on activities of the Catholic Church in Egypt.
On September 18, 2009, the school year began at the Religious Studies Institute in Cairo, which has nearly 300 students, most of they lay men and women, others being religious from various Catholic institutes. The Religious Studies Institute in Sakakini and Tahta (near Assiuot) also began their academic year. These Institutes are dedicated to preparing Sunday School teachers from the various Catholic parishes and religion teachers from the Catholic schools in Egypt.
Last week, as an end-of-the-summer celebration, in the convent of the Sisters of Charity in Kouseya, near Assiuot (500 kilometers south of Cairo), there was a retreat for youth ages 17-35, led by Fr. Yan, Jesuit.
The Assembly of the Patriarch and Bishops of Egypt declared the opening of Vocation Days, November 21-29, in the Cathedral of St. Anthony the Great. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 6/10/2009)
