New York (Agenzia Fides) – “ The coyotes want 3, 4, 5 thousand dollars for a border crossing. An average 200-300 thousand illegal immigrants every year … traffic of at least 600,000 dollars, not counting the drug circle”, says the Executive Director of Border Network for Human Rights, who shares his experience among Mexican migrants attempting to reach the United States in search of a future which will free them from poverty and degradation. “I was born in Mexico, but I live in the United States where I am the director at the frontier of Border Network for Human. Immigration? It is as always a story of economies. In order to grow the United States need an average half a million underpaid workers every year. The country has about 12 million immigrants without identity papers. It is a cycle. Need workers ? Open borders. No need ? Harsher border regulations. Now we are against immigrants because of the recession. In Mexico the average wage is 4 dollars day. Here at least 8 dollars the hour. Industries on the other side save about 35 dollars per day per worker. Do we want to find a solution to the problem of immigration ? If we develop poor nations their citizens will stay put…!” (Luca De Mata) (television programme trailer “La valigia con lo spago”: a series of 4 programmes: an investigation into migratory flows and new slavery in the world: Rai Uno beginning 29 June
2nd evening feature). (Agenzia Fides 20/6/2009; righe 15, parole 233)
