ASIA/HONG KONG - Education for poor children is a priority for Catholic Students Movement in Hong Kong

Monday, 20 April 2009

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – Guaranteeing greater care for poor children is the number one priority this coming year for the International Movement of Catholic Students of Hong Kong, which recently decided to focus on this issue in their Annual Meeting held in March. According to a report from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), on April 19 (yesterday), the new executive committee of the Movement officially took up this commitment during a special Mass. According to the Movement's President, “the present education system impedes poor children from full education rights. Catholic university students ought to help them as much as possible. We should apply social justice, according to Christian teachings.” Presiding the Mass was the new Bishop John Tong, who encouraged the Movement to “actively participate in caring for poor children with a spirit of service, playing a prophetic role in society.” This diocesan organization for the laity, International Movement of Catholic Students of Hong Kong, is a member of the International Movement of Catholic Students (IMCS) and today has 480 members from Hong Kong's 11 universities.
