Rome (Fides Service) - «“Together for Africa” means it is important to let Africans know that we believe in them, we are ready to wager that their efforts will succeed. To communicate, make known is a good way of cooperation». This was how on the occasion of the canonisation of Saint Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei, Rosella Villa, spokesperson of Harambee 2002 solidarity project described the initiative funded by those who took part in the canonisation and many other people.
Africa is not only war, violence, poverty. Africa is also positive and the projects funded by Harambee 2002 are a demonstration. How can we communicate the positive aspect of the black continent? How can we increase awareness about an Africa of which no one speaks?
The Institute for University Cooperation shows a way. On 5 April it announced a “Communicating Africa” documentary and audio-visual competition. The award will go to documentaries which show the positive aspects of life in Africa while not overlooking the present difficulties. An award of 10,000 Euro will be given to the best entry in three different categories:
-Award to non African documentaries
-Award to documentaries produced in Africa.
-Award to documentaries produced by NGOs on their activity in Africa.
The initiative intends to encourage young Africans, and to avoid silence and the attitude “Africa is not important” on the international scene where attention for Africa is limited to war, social tragedies, health emergencies or other calamities.
