AMERICA/PANAMA - Bishop of Colon-Kuna Yala asks that every effort be made to fight the onslaught of violence in the region

Colon-Kuna Yala (Agenzia Fides) – The Church in the Diocese of Colon-Kuna Yala has shown its concern for the increased violence in the area, with constant homicides carried out by gangs and delinquents. This is why it is making an appeal, asking that evil may not have the last word and that everyone may find the path to peaceful coexistence. According to the most recent statistics from Panamanian authorities, the city of Colon had a higher homicide rate than Mexico City, with an average of 33 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants, versus 27 in the Mexican capital. Of the 652 homicides committed on a national level in 2008, 114 of them took place along the Atlantic Coast.
With this in mind, Bishop Audilio Aguilar of Colon-Kuna Yala has observed that it is a complex problem that requires an effort from all sides in overcoming the situation, as it effects all of society. It is an evil that goes beyond only a certain social class.
He also reiterated the fact that there is a need to work with families, the youth, and children. “We need to give values their importance, making the people understand the great gift of life and that it is worth the effort to live uprightly and in mutual respect for one another.”
In reference to the economic aspect, Bishop Aguilar explained that the area has experienced economic growth and Colon is one of the parts where it is most noted: there is the “Free Zone,” where there is a large shopping center; there are 5 ports...the entrance to the Panama Canal, which gives many job opportunities. However, facing this reality – he said – it is sad to see that there is still so much poverty and marginalization within Colon itself and that many times it is also a cause of violence. With that, he asked that the government (local and national) and the Church do all it can in making efforts to improve the situation. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 2/2/2009)
