ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Formation in dialogue for Christians and Muslim educators and teachers

Monday, 15 December 2008

Zamboanga (Agenzia Fides) – Giving formation to Christian and Muslim professors and teachers is one of the main objectives of the movement for Islamic-Christian dialogue called “Sisilah,” active for 25 years in South Philippines. In collaboration with the Inter-Faith Council of Leaders of Zamboanga, which unites Christian and Muslim leaders, the movement has organized seminars for teachers, catechists, and formators from the Christian and Muslim communities. Formation is an environment in which “Sisilah” works intensely, investing time and resources as they are aware that teachers are the ones who help develop the mentality of the new generations. If we want to cultivate dialogue, peace, and a spirit of reconciliation among the youth, there is a need to work with formators, who serve as a point of reference for the youth.
The seminars are attended by professors from schools for learning the Koran, as well as those from Catholic schools, leaders of the communities and peoples, educators from parishes and movements, and agents of civil society.
The seminars are centered on the letter entitled “A Common Word Between Us and You,” written by 138 Muslim leaders to the Holy Father Benedict XVI. The letter continues to be welcomed by Islamic leaders from all over the world. Sisilah says that “it is both a challenge and a treasure for the mission of promoting a culture of dialogue and peace.”
Among the objectives of the seminars are: to build friendships and good relations between Christian and Muslim educators; encourage experiences of interreligious dialogue, educating people in respect and openness towards others; laying foundations for a greater closeness and dialogue among the various communities, in such a way that they can contribute to the establishment of the common good in South Philippines.
