ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - The Church looks to the future and decides to go digital

Tuesday, 7 October 2008

Seoul (Agenzia Fides) – The new project of digitalization and automation for administering and managing various projects and all that encompasses the Catholic community was launched by the Korean Church. The announcement was made in Seoul by the Bishops’ Conference, which has improved its network, with a procedure that has already been tested in the diocese for 10 years and has now extended to other Korean dioceses. The administration, the pastoral projects, communications, ecclesial activities, have all gained speed thanks to the use of the new technologies, in an era that is more and more oriented towards information technology.
Cardinal Nicholas Cheong, Archbishop of Seoul, in announcing the new system, affirmed: “2,000 years ago, the letters sent by Saint Paul were a means of proclaiming and spreading the Gospel: in the same manner, today we will preach the Gospel through the most advanced means of information technology.”
Thanks to the new system, all the documents and ecclesial registries will be computerized, guaranteeing speed and efficiency in their services. Priests and laity will benefit from all this, the Korean Church says, recalling John Paul II’s exhortation to all the faithful in his last Apostolic Letter on the mass media, “The Rapid Development”: “Do not be afraid of the new technologies!”.
The Korean Bishops also hope to create their own entity within the Bishops’ Conference, in charge of overseeing the mass media sector, public relations, and the promotion of information technology initiatives.
The Bishops’ Conference has also recently updated their own website (www.cbck.or.kr), expanding the section on documents and “e-books.” The website also features the various bulletins of the Korean Dioceses, in addition to the many documents of the Church and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
