ASIA/CHINA - Chinese Catholics continue working to help earthquake victims, following the Pope’s example

Thursday, 5 June 2008

Beijing (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic relief effort working to meet the needs of the victims from the quake that hit Sichuan continues. In fact, it has begun to intensify following the indications and example of Pope Benedict XVI. The Diocese of Beijing, it has been reported, as of today has collected among all its parishes and ecclesial base communities: 498,578.80 Yuan (about 50,000 Euros) for first aid, already being sent to the Red Cross in China. Bishop Giuseppe Li Shan of Beijing has personally donated 2, 000 Yuan (200 Euro). The aid collection continues with full steam throughout the entire Catholic community.
The faithful living in the earthquake-struck area are also experiencing a trial of faith, as they have lived tremendously difficult moments. Here are some testimonies from the Diocese of Nan Chong, some 240 kilometers from the epicenter: “When the ground and everything around me began to shake, the first thing I though was, “Jesus, save us!” I just kept repeating this invocation, kneeling on the ground asking for the Lord’s protection and mercy. When the first shock was over, I immediately went to the nearest Church to pray. But, I stayed outside, because the structure was already severely damaged. Now we are celebrating Mass outside.” “It seems that we have been left orphaned, but we leave everything in God’s hands, praying for peace and aid.” “Thanks to the Holy Father’s prayer and support,” said one diocesan priest, “thanks to the many appeals and interventions of the Pope, various European Caritas groups have come to our aid. We are also reflecting on the fragility of human life. We should make an examination of conscience frequently and always be ready to face life and death.” (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 05/06/2008)
