ASIA/KOREA - “Religious education within the family”: Study Seminar

Wednesday, 4 June 2008

Daegu (Agenzia Fides) – The Family Pastoral Commission of the Korean Bishops’ Conference has promoted a study seminar on religious education within the family. The event took place at the Catholic University of Daegu, with an attendance of about 300 people. The talks given during the Seminar gave life to the intense discussion about how to find pastoral guidelines that are most suitable in responding to the sad phenomenon of the gradual decline of the family and society.
During the Seminar, Oh Ji-seop, Professor of Religious Studies at the Sogang University presented a historical panorama on education within the family. Fr. Gregory Roh Gwang-su, Director of the Lay Theological Institute for the Archdiocese of Daegu, spoke of the situation of education in the faith in the Korean Catholic Church. Francis Pal Munsu, Director of the Catholic Family Academy, reflected on the theme of reviving the family, centering it on the theme of faith education.
There were also speeches given by Bishop Paul Hwang Cheol-soo of Pusan, President of the Bishops’ Family Pastoral Commission, and His Excellency Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil, Auxiliary Bishop of Daegu, who said that, “these days, the people seem to place the university entrance exam above all other educational priorities. The education in the faith within the family is urgently needed in order to indicate the right direction in life to the younger generations.” (SL) (Agenzia Fides 4/6/2008)
