Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - “Experience has shown us that a society does not necessarily grow at the rate of its economy, but rather, when it matures in its capacity to dialogue and in its ability to reach consensus that become State policies, that guide the way towards a common national plan. This continues to be a great challenge for our democracy.” These were the words written by the Bishops of Argentina in a statement they issued, calling for an urgent agreement between the government and rural entities in light of the conflict that has been going on for weeks in the country.
“This affirmation,” the statement continued, “has special importance during these moments of tension in which they is an urgent need for the government and rural representatives to reach an accord. All Argentineans need this to occur, however, especially the poor that most suffer the consequences of this situation.” For the Bishops, in a democracy problems should be solved through dialogue and an abandonment of all signs of verbal or physical violence, “emphasizing more the similarities than the differences and always having the common good in mind. This quest should take place in a climate of honesty and respect.” The Bishops conclude their statement asking that the Lord may illumine all those involved so that, “a just and peaceful accord is reached,” and invoke the maternal protection of the Blessed Mother Mary.
In response to this difficult situation, nearly 10,000 people from the south of Santa Fe y Arrecifes, Pergamino, Baradero, and other towns in the north of the province of Buenos Aires, gathered for a march on Sunday to the Shrine of María del Rosario de San Nicolás to ask Mary to intercede in resolving the conflict between the government and the rural entities. Also participating in the event was Bishop Héctor Cardelli of San Nicolás de los Arroyos. The march began at 12:30 and at 3:00 there was a Mass held, which was presided by the Bishop.
