AMERICA/CUBA - Archdiocese of Havana sees dreams come true with the construction of a new seminary

Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Havana (Agenzia Fides) - According to the Archdiocesan magazine “Palabra,” just outside the city of Havana, about 150 km. from the city’s historic center, the new Archdiocesan Seminary of “San Carlos y San Ambrosio” is being built. The immense project is the most significant in the Church in Cuba in the last 50 years. The work on the new building, which began in July 2006, are in mainly die to the limitations of the current site, whose numerous transformations suffered over the years have made it less appropriate as a seminary. The current seminary is located in the historic area and tourist zone of the city, which makes it difficult in finding tranquility and sufficient space. Servant of God John Paul II blessed the cornerstone of the building on his visit to Cuba and now, what was only a dream is becoming a reality.”
The work is being carried out thanks to many donations, including from the Italian Bishops’ Conference and from a group of French Catholics. The Church of Milan (Italy) has donated the stained-glass windows for the structure, and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America has also contributed in its construction.
The current seminary of “San Carlos y San Ambrosio” will not lose its essence and will become a great center for cultural activity and studies, named after Felix Varela. It will also hold a large public library, the Archdiocesan Museum, and rooms for art expositions, concerts, and other events. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 13/5/2008; righe 18, parole 241)
