AFRICA/GHANA – KUMASI ARCHDIOCESE, REVEREND GABRIEL JUSTICE YAW ANOKYE APPOINTED AUXILIARY

Vatican City (Fides Service) – The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II has 30 October 2003, appointed Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Kumasi (Ghana) Reverend Father Gabriel Justice Yaw Anokye, Professor and vice rector of St. Peter’s regional Seminary at Pedu, Cape Coast, assigning to him the titular See of Celle di Mauritania.
Il nuovo Vescovo Ausiliare was born on 27 May 1960 in Emenaa, archdiocese of Kumasi. He studied philosophy at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary at Pedu, Cape Coast. He obtained a Licentiate in Biblical Theology in Kinshasa (R. D. Congo), and a doctorate in the History of Religions and Religious Anthropology in Paris, France, where he studied at the Catholic Institute, the Sorbonne University and the State University. E’ He was ordained a priest on 16 July 1988 in what was then the diocese of Kumasi. He has since been:: assistant priest, youth chaplain, vice director of Major Domo pastoral centre (1989-92); Professor at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary at Pedu,, Cape Coast (1992-94); Professor and Vice-Rector del St. Peter’s Regional Seminary at Pedu, Cape Coast (1999.-2002).
Kumasi Archdiocese (2001) is one of four metropolitan Sees in Ghana. It is situated in central Ghana and has an area of 5.188 sq. km. It has a population of 1.600.000 of whom 350.000 are Catholics gathered in 34 parishes, looked after by 77 priests (65 diocesan, 12 missionary religious), 4 Brothers, 62 Sisters 59 major seminarians, 312 catechists.
