ASIA/HONG KONG - The example of two Canossian Sisters: a long life dedicated to the missions in education and holiness

Monday, 25 February 2008

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - Sister Philomena Liu and Sister Erminia Castilho, two Canossian Sisters, who have dedicated their lives to missionary service in education and health, returned to the Father’s House in January. As the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin) reports, the Canossian community and the diocese of Hong Kong have paid tribute to their work in solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Sister Philomena Liu, who died at the age of 88, worked in the Canossian schools her entire life. Sister Erminia Castilho, who died at the age of 93, dedicated her life to hospital services. Both always carried with them the love of Christ, in their work and in their lives. The Canossian Sisters (Daughters of Charity) were founded in 1808 in Italy, and arrived in Hong Kong in 1860, in Macao in 1874. In Hong Kong, they have always maintained the charism of their foundress, dedicating themselves to service in the fields of education, health, pastoral work, and social service. Today, the community of Hong Kong has 84 Sisters and 3 Novices. They run the Canossa Hospital, the Honeyville Canossian Retreat House, and many other centers for education and charity work.
