Vatican City (Fides Service) – The Holy Father Pope John Paul II has ( 30 October 2003) accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of the diocese of Georgetown (Guyana), presented by Bishop Benedict Singh, in conformity with the Code of Canon Law, Code 401, § 1
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop of Georgetown Reverend Francis Alleyne OSB, Abbot of Tunapuna Monastery (Trinidad).
The Bishop elect was born on 3 December 1951 at Pointe-a-Pierre (Trinidad and Tobago). After studying for the priesthood in Trinidad he was ordained a priest on 7 July 1985. He has since been: Novice Master and Prior. In 1995 he was elected Abbot of Tunapuna monastery: the first Abbot born in Trinidad. Since 1997 he has also been Vice president of the Conference of Religious Superior in the Antilles.
The diocese of Georgetown (1956) is suffragan of the archdiocese of Port of Spain. It has an area of 214.887 sq. km, a population of 800.000 (48% Indian origin, 32% African origin, 6% Amerindians, the rest from various countries). There are 88.000 Catholics gathered in 24 parishes assisted by 30 priests (5 diocesan and 25 religious), with 47 Sisters, and 6 full time catechists. (S.L.)
