Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) - The Young Christian Workers Association recently celebrated 50 years of activity in Hong Kong. The celebrations were held at the parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Hong Kong's diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao, said the solemn anniversary Mass was attended by numerous association members including some non Christians. The priest who presided the Mass retraced the history of the YCWA: “In the 1970s our members were all Catholics, but by the 1980s many non Christians had joined. We have always been close to workers in Hong Kong, especially in difficult times, to defend their dignity and rights, as Catholic Social Doctrine teaches. Today many retired worker members continue to be active in the field of labour ”.
Young Christian Workers, a Catholic international movement of apostolate, was founded by Cardinal Joseph Cardijn in 1924. The first meeting was held on the 29th of April 1925. It is open to workers of all races, faiths and cultures. The Hong Kong branch was started 50 years ago. The main aims of YCWA are to help young workers promote a spirit of solidarity, face life and work with optimism, acquire training and apply the Christian spirit to the world of work. Another precise commitment is to live in keeping with the teaching of the Pope. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 06/12/2007 - righe 24, parole 255)
