ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Bishops denounce corruption and scandals: “the country risks moral bankruptcy”

Tuesday, 30 October 2007

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the Philippines have called for an end to corruption and serious investigation to stop spreading political incorrectness. The Bishops' Conference statement was signed by the president of the Bishops' Conference Archbishop Angel Lagdameo of Jaro.
In the struggle between rival factions, there have been a series of reciprocal accusations of buying votes, using money to mount false scandals and discredit political adversaries, using public funds from development for private interests.
“Our country risks economic and moral bankruptcy" the Archbishop said, calling for serious investigations into the behaviour of prominent politicians, particularly with regard to the trading of votes in elections last May.
The Archbishop said in the civil, social and political life of the country values such as responsibility, transparency, self control, honesty, promotion of the common good, must be guaranteed.
On the occasion of the May elections the local Church urged the candidates not to give in to the temptation of vote trading and to stay away from corruption, embezzlement and violence (see Fides 21/4/2007). (PA) (Agenzia Fides 30/10/2007 righe 26 parole 264)
